List only the onboarding steps the policy requires at this spend level

About this exercise

A new supplier is expected to bring $7,500 a year. Write a prompt for a checklist of exactly the onboarding steps the policy requires at that spend, each line starting "- [ ]" and ending with the owner in parentheses. Leave out steps that only apply at higher spend. Plain text, under 70 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Adding higher-spend steps. The AI includes the security questionnaire and Legal review to be safe. Try: Say: "Include only steps required at $7,500; leave out higher-spend steps."
  • Missing the owner. The AI lists steps without who does them. Try: Say: "End each line with the owner in parentheses."
  • Missing a required step. The AI forgets the insurance certificate or the conflict declaration. Try: Say: "Include every step required at this spend level."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold, headings and bullets by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".

What a strong prompt includes

  • Gives the spend level
  • Gives the line format
  • Excludes higher-spend steps
  • Says how to verify the bank
  • Asks for plain text
