Check your counterclaim paragraph against the rubric
Practice: Showing an example of what you want. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
Your argument essay rubric requires a counterclaim paragraph with three parts. Get exactly 3 numbered lines, one each for Counterclaim, Evidence for it and Rebuttal, each labeled exactly Present or Missing, with the first few words of the sentence that does it (or 'none'), plain text. Don't rewrite or add sentences.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Asking for a check. The AI rewrites the paragraph, adding the missing evidence for you. Try: Say: "Don't rewrite or add sentences. Just label each part."
- Not giving exact labels. Without fixed labels, the AI says it 'could be stronger' and you can't tell what's missing. Try: Say: "Label each part exactly Present or Missing."
- Letting it be generous. Like your peer reviewer, the AI may say it looks fine. Try: Add: "Judge only by Ms. Calloway's three-part rubric."
- Not saying how many lines. The AI picks its own number, and it usually picks more lines than you need. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 3 numbered lines."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Fix the shape: "label plus the first 4 words, nothing else."
- Forgetting where it will be read. AI formats for a screen, with bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in your notes. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
