Calculate an inflation rate from CPI with the math shown
Practice: Showing an example of what you want. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
Your AP Macro problem asks for the inflation rate between two years. Get exactly 3 numbered lines: the formula with the corrected CPI values plugged in, the result as a percent, and one sentence on what it means for a $50 basket of groceries, plain text, under 75 words. Use the corrected 2024 CPI from Ms. Ito's post.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Asking for an explanation. The AI explains inflation in general and may skip your numbers. Try: Ask for the math: "Plug the corrected CPI values into the formula."
- Missing the correction. The typo and the fix are both in your material. Try: Add: "Use 260 for 2024, per Ms. Ito."
- Not saying how many lines. The AI picks its own number, and it usually picks more lines than you need. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 3 numbered lines."
- Skipping the meaning. A percent alone doesn't answer what it means in real life. Try: Add: "End with what it means for a $50 basket."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each line: "each under 20 words."
- Forgetting where it will be read. AI formats for a screen, with bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in your notes. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
