Check a lab report abstract for its four required parts

Practice: Showing an example of what you want. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Your Environmental Science lab abstract must have four parts. Get exactly 4 numbered lines, one each for Purpose, Method, Result and Conclusion, each labeled exactly Present or Missing with the first few words of the sentence that does it (or 'none'), plain text. Judge by the TA's checklist and don't rewrite anything.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Asking for a check. The AI rewrites the abstract with your data plugged in, so it isn't your writing. Try: Say: "Don't rewrite. Just label each part."
  • Not giving exact labels. Without fixed labels, the AI gives a general critique. Try: Say: "Label each part exactly Present or Missing."
  • Not naming the standard. The AI may count 'Overall, the lab helped us understand' as a conclusion. Try: Add: "Judge by Rafael's checklist."
  • Not saying how many lines. The AI picks its own number, and it usually picks more lines than you need. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 4 numbered lines."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Fix the shape: "label plus the first 4 words, nothing else."
  • Forgetting where it will be read. AI formats for a screen, with bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in your notes. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
