Tell the AE about an expansion lead in a short Slack message

  • For Sales and customer success
  • You practice Saying who it's for
  • Time about 5 minutes
  • Level Beginner

About this exercise

Write the Slack message to Dev, the AE. First line exactly "Fernhill Gym - possible expansion". Then exactly 3 bullets starting "- Signal:", "- Decides:" and "- Unknown:", each 12 words or fewer. Then one last line starting "Ask:" with a request to join a call with the decision-maker. Do not promise pricing. Plain text, under 60 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Overselling the lead. The AI says Chicago is joining in Q1. Try: Say: "Use might and unknown; do not overstate."
  • Dropping the decision-maker. The AI talks only about Priya. Try: Say: "Name who decides and whether we have met them."
  • Bullets that run long. The AI writes full sentences. Try: Say: "Each bullet 12 words or fewer."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Leaving the bullet count open. The AI keeps adding bullets until every detail is covered. Try: Name the cap: "at most N bullets, nothing else".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. The AI runs long and cannot count its own words. Try: Cap each part ("each line under 12 words") and add "under N words in total".

What a strong prompt includes

  • Sets the bullets and Ask line
  • Caps bullet length
  • Covers signal, decider, unknown
  • Bans pricing
  • Asks for plain text
  • Caps the bullets
  • Sets a word cap
