About this exercise

Write the follow-up email from Tariq to Anneke. Subject line first (under 8 words), then "Hi Anneke,". Exactly 3 bullets starting "-", each a decision followed by (owner, date), like "Go-live stays Dec 1 (Hana, Dec 1)". Leave out anything that was not decided and all small talk. End with "Tariq". Plain text, under 90 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Including the open question. The AI adds the add-on pricing as a fourth point. Try: Say: "Leave out anything that was not decided."
  • Missing owner and date. The AI writes decisions as plain sentences. Try: Say: "Each bullet ends with (owner, date)."
  • Using the old training date. The AI keeps Nov 17. Try: Say: "Use the new date, Nov 19."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Leaving the bullet count open. The AI keeps adding bullets until every detail is covered. Try: Name the cap: "at most N bullets, nothing else".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. The AI runs long and cannot count its own words. Try: Cap each part ("each line under 12 words") and add "under N words in total".
  • Leaving a requirement unstated. The AI follows its own defaults unless the prompt spells this out. Try: State it plainly in your prompt: the first line is a subject under 8 words, then 'Hi Anneke,', exactly three bullets starting '-', and the email ends with 'Tariq'.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Greeting and sign-off
  • Three bullets with owner and date
  • Excludes undecided and small talk
  • Caps the length
  • Asks for plain text
  • Caps the bullets
  • Sets a word cap
