About this exercise

Write the board note as exactly 3 numbered lines like "1. Reason: $165k, 2 accounts, 37%", ranked by ARR from highest to lowest, using only preventable reasons. Count a duplicated account once. Percent is of total preventable ARR, whole numbers. Then one last unnumbered line "Not preventable (excluded): $Xk". Plain text, under 70 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Counting the duplicate. The AI adds Dune twice, making price $175k. Try: Say: "Count a duplicated ID once."
  • Ranking by account count. The AI puts price first because it has 3 accounts. Try: Say: "Rank by ARR, highest first."
  • Including the shutdown. The AI treats the shutdown as a reason. Try: Say: "Use only preventable reasons; list the rest on the last line."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Leaving the item count open. The AI adds or drops items to feel complete. Try: Say "exactly N numbered lines, nothing else".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. The AI runs long and cannot count its own words. Try: Cap each part ("each line under 12 words") and add "under N words in total".
  • Leaving a requirement unstated. The AI follows its own defaults unless the prompt spells this out. Try: State it plainly in your prompt: the output has exactly 3 numbered lines in the format 'Reason: $Xk, N accounts, P%', followed by one unnumbered last line.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Gives the line format
  • Rank by ARR
  • Dedupes and excludes
  • Gives the last line
  • Asks for plain text
  • Sets the exact item count
  • Sets a word cap
