Frame three make-good options with the right approver for each

About this exercise

Write the note for the CRO in five lines: "A:", "B:", "C:", "Recommendation:" and "Decision needed from:". Each option line shows the dollar value, its percent of the annual fee (one decimal) and the approver tier from the policy. Recommend the lowest-cost option that stays within VP authority. Plain text, under 110 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Recommending what the customer asked. The AI picks C to please the customer. Try: Say: "Recommend the lowest-cost option within VP authority."
  • Misreading the 5% edge. The AI sends A to the CRO. Try: Say: "Up to 5% inclusive is VP authority."
  • Dropping percents. The AI lists dollars only. Try: Say: "Show dollar value, percent to one decimal and approver."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. The AI runs long and cannot count its own words. Try: Cap each part ("each line under 12 words") and add "under N words in total".
  • Leaving a requirement unstated. The AI follows its own defaults unless the prompt spells this out. Try: State it plainly in your prompt: the output has five lines starting 'A:', 'B:', 'C:', 'Recommendation:' and 'Decision needed from:'.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the five labels
  • States the criterion
  • Asks for dollars and percent
  • Names approvers
  • Asks for plain text
  • Sets a word cap
