About this exercise

Label each message with exactly one of: Urgent, Today, This week, Later. Output exactly 5 numbered lines like "1. Later - newsletter". Apply the rules in order: Urgent beats Today, which beats This week. Reason is 4 words or fewer. Plain text, nothing else.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Inventing labels. The AI uses High, Medium or Low. Try: Say: "Use only Urgent, Today, This week or Later."
  • Ignoring the order of rules. The AI labels the CEO email as Later because there is no deadline. Try: Say: "Urgent beats Today, which beats This week."
  • Long reasons. The AI explains each label in a sentence. Try: Say: "Reason of 4 words or fewer."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Leaving the item count open. The AI adds or drops items to feel complete. Try: Say "exactly N numbered lines, nothing else".
  • Leaving a requirement unstated. The AI follows its own defaults unless the prompt spells this out. Try: State it plainly in your prompt: the output has exactly 5 numbered lines in the format 'N. Label - reason' with nothing before or after.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Format example
  • Allowed labels
  • Rule order
  • Short reasons
  • Asks for plain text
  • Sets the exact item count
