Boil a messy week into Wins, Risks and Asks for leadership

  • For Managers and team leads
  • You practice Saying who it's for
  • Time about 5 minutes
  • Level Intermediate

About this exercise

Write the weekly update for leadership in exactly three lines starting "Wins:", "Risks:" and "Asks:". Each line is one sentence of 25 words or fewer with at least one number from the notes. Leave out routine and social items. Plain text, under 70 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Including routine items. The AI mentions the lunch or the slow CRM. Try: Say: "Leave out routine and social items."
  • No numbers. The AI writes general statements. Try: Say: "Each line has at least one number from the notes."
  • Vague asks. The AI asks for "support". Try: Say: "Asks: name the specific call and the specific Engineering date."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. The AI runs long and cannot count its own words. Try: Cap each part ("each line under 12 words") and add "under N words in total".
  • Leaving a requirement unstated. The AI follows its own defaults unless the prompt spells this out. Try: State it plainly in your prompt: the output has exactly three lines starting 'Wins:', 'Risks:' and 'Asks:', each one sentence.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the three labels
  • Requires numbers
  • Excludes routine
  • Caps the length
  • Asks for plain text
  • Sets a word cap
