About this exercise

You're auditing the Northdesk blog. Write a prompt for a markdown table with columns Post | Action | Reason (6 words or fewer) for all six posts, where the Action follows these rules in order: Keep if monthly visits are 500 or more; Update if visits are 100 to 499; below 100, Merge into the overlapping post if one is listed, otherwise Remove. Then a line starting "Counts:" like "Counts: Keep 1, Update 2, Merge 2, Remove 1". Under 110 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Letting backlinks decide. The AI keeps P5 because of 14 backlinks. Try: Say: "Apply the rules by visits (and overlap) only."
  • Merging without a target. The AI writes 'Merge' with no post. Try: Say: "Merge into the overlapping post, naming it."
  • Using age. The AI treats P3 as too new or P4 as old. Try: Say: "Age is not part of the rules."
  • Wrong table or count line. The AI adds columns and no summary. Try: Name the columns and the Counts line format.
  • Letting markdown through. AI adds bold text and headings by default. Try: Add: "Plain text only, no bold, no headings."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and often runs past a word limit. Try: Cap each part (for example "each line under 15 words") so the total lands well under the limit.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the columns
  • States the ordered rules
  • Names the merge target
  • Gives the count line
  • Caps length
