About this exercise

Write a prompt for plain text with exactly five lines: "Per shift:", "Per week:", "Demand:", "Gap:" and "Recommend:". Show the math on the first four. Count the planned maintenance loss in the week, and use the Saturday shift's own productive hours. The Recommend line must say how many units are still short after a Saturday shift and that the operations manager decides on overtime. Under 110 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Forgetting maintenance. The AI uses 10 full shifts and understates the gap. Try: Say: "Subtract the 2 productive hours lost to maintenance."
  • Treating Saturday as a full shift. The AI gives Saturday 7.5 hours and says the gap is covered. Try: Say: "A Saturday shift has 6 productive hours; show the units and what is still short."
  • Wrong labels. The AI writes a narrative with its own headings. Try: Quote the five labels in order.
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold, headings and bullets by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".

What a strong prompt includes

  • Quotes the five labels
  • Shows the math
  • Accounts for maintenance
  • Names who decides
