About this exercise

Write a prompt for plain text with exactly four lines: "Old reorder point:", "New reorder point:", "Change:" and "Action:". Reorder point is daily use times lead time plus safety stock. Show the math on the first three lines. Action says ORDER NOW if on hand is at or below the new reorder point, otherwise HOLD, and that the planner confirms. Under 70 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Using the old reorder point. The AI agrees with the warehouse lead that 280 is fine. Try: Say: "Use the new 8-day lead time for the new reorder point."
  • Skipping the math. The AI states 300 without working. Try: Say: "Show the math on the first three lines."
  • Wrong lines. The AI writes a paragraph. Try: Quote the four labels.
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold, headings and bullets by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".

What a strong prompt includes

  • Quotes the four labels
  • Gives the formula
  • Uses the new lead time
  • Defines the action
  • Asks for plain text
