About this exercise

Accounts payable asked whether to take an early-payment discount. Write a prompt for plain text with exactly five lines: "Discount:", "Discount deadline:", "Net due date:", "Amount if discounted:" and "Flag for finance:". Count days from the invoice date as the terms state. Show the math. The flag line says the cash timing choice belongs to Finance. Under 80 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Counting from the received date. The AI follows the clerk and starts at March 6. Try: Say: "Count days from the invoice date, not the received date."
  • Recommending to take it. The AI says to take the discount. Try: Say: "Flag that the cash timing decision belongs to Finance."
  • Wrong lines. The AI writes a paragraph. Try: Quote the five labels in order.
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold, headings and bullets by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".

What a strong prompt includes

  • Quotes the five labels
  • Counts from the invoice date
  • Shows the math
  • Leaves timing to Finance
  • Asks for plain text
