About this exercise
Write a prompt for a short memo to Carla Dunn in Finance with exactly three headings: Landed cost, Flags and Ask. Landed cost shows each vendor's total in dollars with the math, using Finance's planning rate, and the difference. Flags notes what could change the numbers. Ask requests what Finance should confirm. Do not recommend hedging or a vendor. Under 175 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Applying duty to freight. The AI takes 4% of the goods plus freight. Try: Say: "Duty applies to the goods value only, not freight."
- Recommending hedging or a vendor. The AI advises on currency hedging or picks the winner. Try: Say: "Do not recommend hedging or a vendor; Carla decides."
- Forgetting the unconfirmed duty. The AI treats the 4% as certain. Try: Say: "Flag what could change the numbers."
- Wrong headings. The AI writes its own sections. Try: Name the three headings in order.
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the headings
- Shows the dollar math
- Flags what could change
- Rules out advice
- Sets a length limit
