About this exercise

Write a prompt for plain text with exactly four lines: "Buy:", "Lease:", "Difference:" and "Flags:". Buy and Lease show the three-year math. Buy is purchase price plus maintenance for three years minus the expected resale value. The Flags line lists what is uncertain or needs a decision, separated by semicolons. Finance decides; do not recommend. Under 100 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Ignoring resale or maintenance. The AI compares 24,000 with 28,080 only. Try: Say: "Buy = price + 3 years of maintenance - resale; show it."
  • Recommending. The AI says buying is clearly better. Try: Say: "Do not recommend. Finance decides."
  • Missing the uncertain items. The AI treats the resale value as certain. Try: Say: "Flags: include the resale estimate, up-front cash and missing lease terms."
  • Wrong lines. The AI writes a pros and cons list. Try: Quote the four labels.
  • Markdown extras and long output. AI adds bold, headings and bullets by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings" and cap each line, for example "each line under 15 words".

What a strong prompt includes

  • Quotes the four labels
  • Gives the buy formula
  • Shows the math
  • Leaves the decision
  • Asks for plain text
