About this exercise

Your CMO, Imani Brooks, will drop a revenue chart into a slide and needs a takeaway title and a caption. Write exactly 2 plain-text lines: 'Title:' (a full-sentence takeaway of 8 words or fewer, not a label like 'Revenue by month') and 'Caption:' (one sentence under 28 words giving the number, the comparison and the cause). Use only the figures given.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • A label as a title. The AI writes 'Monthly web revenue' which says nothing. Try: Add: "Title: a takeaway sentence of 8 words or fewer, not a label."
  • Missing the comparison. The AI gives the October figure with nothing to compare to. Try: Add: "Compare with October 2024's $390K (+20%)."
  • Guessing the cause. The AI invents reasons like seasonality or a sale. Try: Add: "Name a cause from the notes: the holiday catalog launched Oct 8."
  • Leaving the format to chance. The AI picks its own length and layout unless told the exact shape. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold or headings."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each part instead, for example "each line under 15 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the reader
  • Asks for a takeaway title
  • Asks for the number and comparison
  • Asks for a cause from the notes
  • Fixes the two lines
